ACTD Training
An Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD) is an OSD
approved project to permit early and relatively inexpensive evaluation
of mature or emerging technologies to meet a critical Warfighter need.
The evaluation is accomplished by the Warfighter to determine military
utility before a commitment is made to proceed with formal acquisition.
An ACTD includes operational concepts developed specifically to take
full advantage of the new capability. If sufficient military utility is
demonstrated, an ACTD will normally leave a residual operational
capability with the Warfighter and, when additional quantities are
required, the ACTD will transition to an acquisition program. A
Joint Concept Technology Demonstration (JCTD) is similar to and ACTD
with greater emphasis on tailoring solutions to a Combatant Commander's
specific needs ("needs pull").
Since its inception in 1994, the ACTD Program has grown in importance
and value to both the Warfighter and industry. More than 130 ACTDs have
been approved representing and investment of more than $5B. The ACTD
Program provides unique opportunities and challenges for industry and
Government alike. The training we provide explains the evolving ACTD
process and helps attendees understand how to be effective participants.
