Credentials
Mary Carter O’Connor, M.A.
Mary O’Connor’s education includes boarding school in
Virginia; B.A. from Stanford University with majors in English and Art;
graduate degrees in Education and Guidance & Counseling from San Jose State
University and the University of Colorado; and extensive Doctoral work at
the University of Denver. In addition to her degree studies, Mary has
completed dozens of admission training workshops conducted by the National
Association of Independent Schools, School Scholarship Service, Secondary
Schools Admission Test Board, National Association for College Admission
Counseling, College Entrance Examination Board, Harvard University, and the
Neuropsychological Testing Institute.
Before returning to private practice in 1997, Mary
worked for the College Entrance Examination Board for eight years; first, as
Director of the Rocky Mountain Region and later on special admission and
assessment projects in the Washington, D.C., Office. During these years she
taught hundreds of workshops for teachers, counselors, administrators,
parents, and students on issues related to school achievement, testing, and
college admission. Previously, she served as Associate Director of
Admission for Marketing at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Director of Admission
and Financial Aid at The Fountain Valley School in Colorado, and as a
teacher, guidance counselor, sports coach, and tutor in Colorado and
California.
She is an active member of the National Association for
College Admission Counseling (NACAC), Higher Education Consultants
Association (HECA), Rocky Mountain Association for College Admission
Counseling (RMACAC), Colorado Council on High School and College Relations (CCHS/CR),
and Rotary International. Currently she serves on the National Admission
Practices (ethics) Board and was formerly the Chair of the Rocky Mountain
Association for College Admission Counseling (RMACAC) Admission Practices
Committee and Co-Chair of the Colorado Council Admission Practices
Committee. These committees monitor the ethics of the college admission
process and the counselors and admission officers who work in the field of
college admission. Ethical standards are set by The NACAC Statement of
Principles of Good Practice. In addition, she is currently Chair of
Professional Development for RMACAC, Past President of the Higher Education
Consultants Association (2002-2005), Past President of the Rotary Club of
Broadmoor, Chairman of the Scholarship Selection Committee and currently
serves as an Assistant Governor for this Rotary District. All of these
activities, as well as the dozens of workshops she teaches each year, guide
the way she works with students and families. |
